The biggest difference between middle school volleyball and high school volleyball is that in high school, you actually have a position you play instead of just desperately trying to keep the ball off the ground. I was put in the setter position pretty much immediately, in all likelihood due to my short stature. It was probably for the best, I enjoy being the central part of the play and being in control of the game - or at least as in control one person on a team can be. Being a setter is just like being a quarterback, except no one watching actually cares about you. It’s ok though, that's part of the job and if I mess up then only everybody notices anyway. In all seriousness, learning how to play smart was crucial to improving in other sports like soccer, and it was really fun to try and excel in that aspect of the game instead of just relying on being athletic. Reflecting on it now, having both brains and brawn in any sport makes you a much better player.
